What was the most memorable moment of your day?
Geneva: We decided to write our own vows, which flowed so easily for Mark, but which took me until the last minute to get the wording just right. Locking eyes and holding hands as he said his vows and then heard my vows (for the very first time) was simply magical.
Mark: Seeing my beautiful wife-to-be for the first time that day as she walked around the corner in her dress was my most memorable moment. The anticipation of that moment was especially incredible after having completed a short pre-wedding photo session blindfolded the hour before.
Funniest memory from your wedding day?
Our flower girl, Annika Gess, (daughter of my bridesmaid Rena Gess and her husband Adam) had been practicing her “flower throwing” all afternoon. When the ceremony began, she created her own path to the aisle and stopped behind the last row of guests and meticulously emptied her basket, by the handful, in a deliberate pile of petals, before being escorted back to her seat by her dad. She was completely at home in the spotlight of everyone’s smiles and laughter.
Where did/will you go on your honeymoon?
(As written by the beautiful bride!) We went to Cuba! It was really important for us to start our marriage off with both adventure and service—two qualities that drew us to each other initially, and which we want to foster for the long haul. We started in Havana for a few days, relaxed in Varadero for a few more, then rented a car to see the “real Cuba” through the countryside and southern coast.
Our entry into Cuba was sanctioned through Gloves Go Global, a non-profit organization founded by my sister and I in 2012. While in Cuba, Mark and I were able to forge new relationships with veterinary clinics, pediatric hospitals, and the International Relations Department of Cuba’s Office of Public Health, through which we were able to donate medical supplies that we had brought with us. During our stay in Cuba, the U.S. Embassy was reopened – a momentous, historical victory for the future relationship between our countries, as well as for Gloves Go Global’s relationship with Cuba’s Public Health System.
